The Trump administration
has sparked a trade war with the European Union after announcing the imposition
of large tariffs on steel
and aluminium exports.
The United States had initially granted an exemption to the EU from levies introduced by Donald Trump in March in
order to protect American businesses, after European governments lobbied against the taxes. But this exception was due to expire today, and trade negotiations designed to
extend it were judged to have failed by Washington. The EU has responded by saying it would impose retaliatory tariffs on US goods and have the policy declared illegal. Around 32,000 people in the UK work in the steel industry. The GMB union has warned thousands of jobs are at risk.
